I came across the concept of Extreme Knitting or Big Knitting Today.

With the local Knit in Public event nearing, and intent possibly for a big of looney Big Knitting to partake, this totally caught my interest!

Give it a google. Its a WHOLE WORLD!

I find this completely fascinating. For patterns and ideas and whatnot on Big Stitch Knitting:

Yarn Crawl

Today my husband and I visited the local yarn shop, Never Enough Wool as they were participating in the local Yarn Crawl.

As soon as we walked in, I felt my pulse speed up a tad. 3 LARGE rubbermaid bins marked 1$ a ball….and I could see some lovelys peeking out.

Some GORGEOUS interesting yarns. ALOT of mercerized cotton, a bunch of fancies and other odds and sods.

I grabbed up some OnLine Linie 59, so it claims on the ball band.
Carol had several colors but I focussed on the purples, not owning any purples in my current yarn stash.

I kept having to remind myself that I don’t need to own EVERY ball of yarn I like.

Mauk treated me to a new set of 3.25mm Addi Lace Turbos. And he got himself a set as well, I think in 3.5mm. I’m learning I prefer the bronze pointy tipped versus the standard Addi’s.

He had decided to start a mystery project using two shades of cotton Carezza. This involved me showing him how to do magic loop. He’s only ever knitted a scarf (of lovely Patagonia Araucania which he gave to me for Christmas) so it seems he’s doing fairly well knitting whatever he’s knitting, using the circular needles, in the round, for the first time.

I am attending the Beginners Sock Class at Never Enough Wool as of this Tuesday.

We’re meeting once a week to learn how to knit socks, under the guidance of the fabulous Barb.

We’re using the Beginner Sock Pattern 9728 from Knitting Pure and Simple.

For the class, we buy the pattern and pay a simple 20$ class fee and purchase or bring our yarn/needle of choice. (and honestly, 20$ does not remotely cover the amount the ladies have taught me already in the past months)

I spent a morning at Romni trying to pick a special sock wool but came out empty handed. Then equally undecided and miserable, I ended up asking Barb to pick for me from Never Enough Wool‘s Collection. I am working with a celery colored Cascade Heathers 220 worsted weight wool.

Barb taught us how to use the magic loop method with our circular needles. T’was cool to learn how simple it really is.

Chapter 3: On Towards

I meandered over to Never Enough Wool and asked Carol how to Purl.
Once I knew how to Purl, I felt like I could venture into creative uses of mixing up the stitches.

I realized quickly that I could simply change out yarn color by tying on a thread of the other color and snipping off the ball of the original color. Thus led me to stripes.

After Purling for a bit, I went out one night for a walk. I popped into the local cafe where ‘everyone knows your name’ A friend and fellow newbie knitter was working. She mentioned that Never Enough Wool was hosting an open knit night Thursdays. And that Carol’s husband Doug allegedly often dropped off baked treats for the knitters to enjoy, hehehe.

Away I went, unbeknownst it would be where I could be found from there on in every Thursday till the boy be born in February.

On these nights I picked up two valuable knitting reflections, one from Carol and the other from Barb, the part timer with Never Enough Wool:

Carol: Did she teach you to knit with your needles under your arms?

Barb: Theres only two stitches in knitting: the knit stitch and the purl stitch.

The first helped me keep myself in style and removed the chaos from my early knitting days.

The second made me realize that there was a wealth of things I could create with my current skills. That if I took my time and learned without pushing myself too far beyond my ability, and layering and layering the more complicated ways of manipulating those two basic stitches: I could knit anything if I allowed myself to try.

wrestling a porcupine

Yay me! I’m finally tackling the daunting task of knitting a hat.
a straight ribbed baby toque, like the ones the hospital gives out to the newborns.
I came across this fab pattern which seemed simple enough.

I ran off on the family to the local yarn shop, Never Enough Wool and asked Carol: our lovely proprietor, to show me how to get on the needles. I didn’t anticipate the complexity of what I was asking her.

As Carol said, knitting with dpn’s is like ‘wrestling a porcupine’.

I purchased some 4mm Clover double pointed needles and practised on a skein of malabrigo. I ended up deciding to I wanted a more blue shade of a DK weight. I went with a sale ball of Luxury Collection Superwash Merino.

I feel like the world of knitting is realllly starting to open up for me!
